The 27th annual Korea International Broadcast, Audio and Lighting Equipment Show (KOBA) was held from May 16 to 19 at the Coex convention center in Seoul, under the slogan this year of “To UHD and Beyond.”

The convention was sponsored by the Ministry of Science, the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy, the Korea Communications Commission, the TV stations KBS, MBC, SBS, EBS, OBS and CBS, and many other companies and broadcasting organizations across the industry. As the broadcasting and communications industry in Korea is growing, KOBA has been accredited by the Association of Korea Exhibition Industries as an official international exhibition.

Attendance this year was 41,053 people. Local Korean vendors and dealers had their own stands, and most overseas vendors were located among the dealer’s stands. A recent trend is for a number of the principals to have their own booths. This does lead to some confusion, as some overseas companies have multiple dealers, usually handling different product lines, with each often promoting an overseas brand with large logos, implying that they are the main dealer here in Korea.

The event this year covered a total of 27,997 square meters in Coex Halls A, C and D. It presented the next generation’s broadcast services and showed the future of image, sound and lighting. There were 1,014 companies from 29 countries. In particular, during KOBA, more than 80 international broadcasting technology conferences were hosted by the Korea Broadcasting Engineers & Technicians Association (KOBETA), and through the sound-related technical experts seminar organized by the Korea Association of Sound Artists (KASA) and the Acoustical Society of Korea. They provided an opportunity to acquire information about sound and broadcasting systems. Other than that, various events were also available for visitors.

Hall A on level 1 was dedicated to audio, lighting and related events. Although there were some studio products in the hall, the products on display were mainly concentrated on selling to venues and shows. With the advent of K-pop and the growth of live productions in Korea, this section of the exhibition was much larger than you would find at other broadcast and media sales conventions. The other two halls, C and D, on level 3, featured more broadcast products and services along with the local major TV networks promoting programmings and their own form of newer technologies.

The main products on display were 4K, UHD, smart TVs, mobile TVs, digital content, cameras, video tape recorders, post-production systems, delivery and distribution equipment, video post-production equipment, animation generators, cable television systems, internet and satellite broadcasting equipment, audio equipment, microphones, consoles, mixers and related instruments and professional light and stage equipment.

Along with the brand-new exhibition items, such as mobile phones, smart media, displays, LEDs and other content, the number of emerging exhibition items and companies increases with the growth of broadcasting and the move toward higher valued-added businesses.

With innovative techniques, not only in broadcasting but also in smart technologies, which were highlighted with fusion techniques, UHD and 4K, domestic and international companies took part with items that are visually enhanced and advanced in safety, such as UHD-related digital televisions or projectors.

The International Broadcasting Technology Conference that was hosted by the Korea Broadcasting Engineers & Technicians Association (KOBETA) and the Korea E&EX was held at the COEX Conference Center with more than 80 different sections. The conference was mainly about major issues in regard to notable broadcasting techniques and policies, such as UHD television, smart media, VR and drones, which seems to attract many visitors. This year, the KOBA World Media Forum focused only on the issue of international broadcasting.
